Dr. Elizabeth McRae performs laser hair removal for residents of Fredericksburg, TX.
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure which removes unwanted hair using pulses of laser light. The laser destroys the hair follicle and prevents future hair growth.
Several treatments are often needed to maintain an extended period without hair growth. Maintenance treatments may also be needed periodically.
Laser hair removal is most effective for patients who have dark hair and light skin.
How Is Laser Hair Removal Performed?
Before the procedure, the hair being removed will be trimmed to be a few millimeters above the surface of the skin. The laser will be adjusted based on the patient’s skin color and on the thickness and color of the hair to be treated. The outer layers of skin will be protected with a cold gel, which will aid the laser light in penetrating the skin.
During the procedure, the doctor and patient should both wear eye protection as appropriate. The doctor will give a pulse of laser light to the area being treated and will watch the area to be sure that no unexpected reactions occur.
After the treatment, the patient will be given an ice pack or an anti-inflammatory lotion to alleviate discomfort. The skin may feel like it has been sunburned for a day or two after the procedure. This can be relieved with moisturizers or cold compresses. If another laser hair removal session is needed, it can be scheduled after four to six weeks.
